Lord in the Hebrew Old Testament: Adown and Adownai
Adown, Strong’s number 113, is used 335
times in the Hebrew Old Testament. It is from an unused Hebrew root that meant
“to rule.” It is translated lord, master, sir, and owner. Kings, fathers,
husbands, angels, and messengers from God are all referred to in the Old
Testament as lords with the Hebrew
word adown. In the King James Version
of the Bible adown as lord is generally printed with a lower
case l.
Adownai, Strong’s number 136, is based on a
figurative usage of the plural form of adown.
When this plural form is connected to a singular subject, this heterosis is
called the plural intensive. The plural intensive, almost without exception,
refers to God in the Old Testament. The Sopherim, the medieval scribes
associated with the Hebrew text, in 134 places, changed the original Hebrew word
Jehovah to Adownai. These are listed in E.W. Bullinger’s
Companion Bible, appendix 32.
Those uses of Lord have been noted
below as: “Sopherim – Jehovah.” When the King James Version translates Jehovah as LORD, it uses all capital letters. When the King James Version
translates adownai as Lord, it capitalizes the L.
There are
notable exceptions in the use of the plural intensive, adownai, for God alone. In Gen 42:30 & 33 Joseph’s brothers
refer to Joseph as the adownai of the
land. In Genesis 45:8 Joseph refers to himself as “adownai of Pharoah’s household.”
Although Joseph
had concealed his true identity, his brothers understood his position of
authority in
Linguistically,
it is important to note that in Gen 43:20; 44:5, 7-9, 18 -20 and 22 when Joeseph’s bretheren speak to him
directly, they refer to him as adown,
without the plural intensive. They are not addressing him according to his full
authority. They address him according to his immediate authority over them.
Although Christ
in glory is revealed coming from the heavens as Lord of Lords and King of Kings
(Revelation 17:14), and, therefore, could be addressed as Adownai, his prophetic title in the Old Testament is adown. This is plain from Psalm 110:1a: “The
LORD
(Jehovah) said unto my Lord (adown— singular)...” David’s adown
is the Son of God. The messenger of the new covenant is called adown in Mal 3:1b: …and the Lord
(adown— singular), whom ye seek,
shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye
delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts.”
There are also
a number of exceptions in which adown,
rather than adownai, is used of
Jehovah God. The first category of exceptions is related to the supreme quality
of God’s dominion. For instance, God is “lord, adown, of all the earth.” Since this supreme lordship is the
meaning of the plural intensive, adownai,
the use of plural intensive would be redundant. These exceptional uses are also
marked below with “2” for reference. The two examples of the phrase the “Lord (adown) of lords” have been marked with “2b.”
There are also six instances of the phrase “the Lord (adown— singular) of the whole earth” in the Old Testament. These
have been marked with “2a.”
Jehovah is God
in relationship to His creation. He is Jehovah to His people
When God refers
to Himself as master, or adown, in
accordance with this covenant, these verses are marked “3a.” For these same
reasons, in direct address, either Addownai or adown
is used by those under the covenant. Addownai is often used to address God in intercessory prayer
or according to His full glory known to all the earth. On the other hand, adown is used in refernce
to God as Jehovah or master according to the promises of His convenat with
In a number of
places, the King James Version translators put themselves in a dilemma from
which they apparently had little recourse. The use of LORD in place of Jehovah in the Hebrew text,
meant that when God’s word used Adownai
Jehovah, Lord Jehovah, the King James Translators had a problem. They could
have translated this phrase as Lord LORD, but this would
have been embarrassingly redundant. They chose instead to translate this as
Lord GOD. The use of all capitals for God is the signal to a careful reader
that Adownai Jehovah (Old Testament
phrase 23) is in the original Hebrew. These have also been shown below.
