The Definition of Being in the Lord

Our eternal standing with our Father God is revealed as "Christ-in-us" (Col. 1:27). Our fellowship walk with God is being "in Christ" (I John 2:5-6). Remaining in Christ in relationship to our brothers and sisters in Christ, continuing in fellowship with God as a spiritual grown-up in the family of God, is not only being in Christ. This is our walk in the Lord. Once we grow up spiritually, we serve others as we serve our Lord. Our walk in Christ starts with being cleansed from sin and walking in light. As this walk continues, we begin to walk in love toward our spiritual family and towards the world. Our walk in love towards the world is to fulfill our ministry of reconciliation as ambassadors for Christ. The expression of our Christ-like walk of love within the household is to be faithful in the Lord.

Only at the end of the practical section of Romans, Romans 12-16, the section dealing with our walk in Christ, are the fully mature in Christ first introduced. These fully mature are marked out in the word as being in the Lord even as those among the Navajo warriors were the specially marked out and committed "sash-wearers" among their family and tribes. When God introduces the elder committed believers to the new saint in Romans 12-16, He gives each new saint a taste of the riches of the glory of His mystery. This introduction to our beautiful heavenly family, and to the elders that display the riches of God's grace, leads us to want to know even more.

The Uses of In Christ Compared to the Use of In the Lord

As evidence that in the lord is not the same thing as being in Christ, compare 1 Timothy 2:5:

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

and 1 Thessalonians 5:12:

And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

No one is over us in Christ, in our relationship to God through the head Christ Jesus except the Lord; however, in the Lord, in the mature walk of love and service in the household, we are to submit one to another. In the household we have overseers who are deserving of our special respect. Again compare Galatians 3:28:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

to Colossians 3:18:

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

In Christ, in our fellowship with God, there is neither male nor female; however, in the Lord, there are husbands and wives. Likewise, consider Galatians 3:28 above and 1 Corinthians 7:22:

For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.

Again, in Christ there is neither bond nor free, however, in the Lord, within the household, some believers are called as servants and others are called being free.

Our Walk of Service in the Lord

Consider John 15:5:

I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

and I Corinthians15:58

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

Being in the Lord refers to our walk in service to God and His family. Being in the Lord refers to our actions as God's sons. It refers to who we are in practice. Christ in is sonship. In Christ is fellowship, our relationship with God. To be in the Lord one must have Christ in and be in Christ.

To be in the Lord requires being in Christ. II Timothy 2:20-23 outlines the requirements for being in the Lord:

But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

If a man therefore purge (ekkathairo) himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure (katharos)heart.

Throughout God's word the believer is referred to as an earthen vessel of mercy with the glory of Christ within us. Here we are an earthen vessel for the purposes of honor and the master's use if we purge ourselves from the tendencies of youth to want what is not needed. I John 1:7 explains the only way that we can be cleansed of any impurity:

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth (katharizo) us from all sin.

If we do not cleanse ourselves by choosing to walk in fellowship, we are still in God's household, but we are not fit for the master's use. We are not vessels of honor. There are no rewards for our walk. Any dishonor or impurity that the believer is filled with is from his or her own old man nature. What is important to recognize is that one cannot serve in God's household unless one is fit for the master's use. If the master cannot use your services, how can you serve?

The last section of II Timothy 2:23, "with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart," is especially important to understanding what it means to be fit for the master's use and, hence, to walk in the Lord. First of all, as intense as the internal commitment is to walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, you and I will never be alone if we choose to walk with him, for II Timothy says "with them that call," present tense. It is not with them who have called, it is with them that call. In fact the Greek reads, "with them that are calling." The world always makes this promise, "get married and you'll never be alone," or, "put a ring through your nostril, and you'll never be alone." The world lies. God tells the truth. God promises that in the dulos' absolutely sold out commitment to the Father, the believer who walks in the Lord will never, ever be alone. Not only will God be there, but somewhere in the world right now there are those who are calling on the Lord out of a pure heart with whom a servant of the Lord can be.

Secondly, II Timothy is written to a younger believer in the ministry who has lived and taught the gospel with the apostle Paul. Hence, although it is impossible to call on the Lord out of a pure heart while refusing to be in fellowship with God, there are other categories of commitment that also constitute a pure heart. Some of these are set in Luke 9:57-10:1. They include a desire to serve not based on a desire to receive a place to live peacefully in this world. This part of Luke is about the quality of heart it takes to serve; it is not saying that one must never have a house. Luke 9:60 is about not allowing what tradition holds up as success to come before what God asks of us as Hs sons. Finally, this section of Luke shows how we should not, even for the love of our earthly families, look back from God's heavenly calling to us for His family. Calling on the Lord out of a pure heart is bigger than purging oneself from youthful lusts, but it includes purging ourselves from these.

When we have begun to grow up in Christ, then we are ready to walk in the Lord. However, there is no second base without first base. There is no one in the Lord who is not prepared to carry out the ministry of service already given to every believer in the household of God. This foundational ministry of service is the ministry of reconciliation. One does not need to go door to door unless they are sent, but the word asks that we are prepared to speak the gospel. Ephesians 6:14-15 is part of the directions for being strong in the Lord:

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

and again in 1 Peter 3:15:

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.

If we are not mentally prepared to speak the gospel to folk who have a need, we can forget about being in the Lord. Talking about being in the lord and not being mentally prepared to speak God's word is double talk. As it is written in II Corinthians 4:13:

We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak;

If we believe, we speak. What are we looking back at if we believe and receive from God but we will not speak? Now, speaking the gospel is not a burden that everyone that comes to fellowship must be subjected to or they get some sort of doggone lecture. However, you know who you are. If you have started to grow up in Christ, and have started to know God and the greatness of His love for you, and if you have a desire to grow up with in Christ, you must be prepared in your mind to speak His word of truth when the door opens up.

Our Rights and Abilities to Walk in the Lord

In the Lord is our walk of service in the household of God. Once we born again we have the rights and privileges as sons of God. One of the privileges we have is that in the name of Jesus Christ we may come before our heavenly Father whenever we want. Because we are sons, we have access to God. That's where Ephesians 2:18 begins:

For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

As God's sons Ephesians 2:19 continues:

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

We are fellowcitizens with the saints. Hence, we have legal rights as sons of God along with all of the others sanctified in Christ. God has also made us members of His household. In the Bible, being in the household of a believer was a status of special blessing whether you were family or not. In Ephesians we are in the household because we are family. As sons we have legal rights, and as sons we are also in God's household and to receive those blessings. For instance, what fun would it be to be a child in the Manetti household if some food, clothing, and shelter didn't come with the deal? Receiving the benefits of being God's sons is what it means to be in God's household. However, these benefits are spiritual. Living in accordance with God's Word leads to physical prosperity in every category, no matter who tries it. However, God has provided spiritual benefits to help his sons and daughters walk the greatness of His Word. These benefits are as unstoppable as the name of our Lord himself. In every age these ministries and spiritual benefits are available.

Ephesians continues to reveal the blessings of being in the household of God that are provided through the gift ministries and through every member of the body of Christ. The revelation given in Ephesians was not given just to inspire us to do the fundamentals of prayer, the obedience of believing, and the glory of the renewed mind walk. The revelation in Ephesians is given to those who are already doing these fundamentals. The blueprint of the household is given to the faithful in Christ so that the faithful in Christ can walk accurately in the Lord within the household of God.

In our natural families, when we are young we receive the services of the household, then, as we mature, we begin to provide the services within the household to the younger family members. This is so also in the body of Christ. Ephesians sets forth the master plan of God's household exalted upon its heavenly foundations, so that we can walk with God and believe to do our specific part in the body of Christ. When we are fully mature and serving within the household of God, we are in the Lord.

The Household of God in the Lord

There is a beautiful progression in Ephesians 2:18-19. Since we each have access to God, we are citizens together. As citizens we are together with equal rights and authority in God’s kingdom. Then Ephesians 2:19 tells us that we are part of the household of God. This is far more personal, complete, and interrelated that being simple citizenship. The third thing God tells us is that, as an interrelated unit we are, metaphorically, the temple of God. God tells us His plan for the unified household of God. Ephesians 2:20-21 explains:

And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

In the Old Testament and in the gospels, God's house was a house of prayer, the temple. As in English, the Greek word for house is related to the Greek word for household. However, the household and the temple are two different things entirely. When the Bible says that we are citizens and of the household of God this is the literal truth. When God says we are the temple, it is metaphoric complex that emphasizes out importance to the Father, to one another and to the world. Ephesians 2:20-21 ends the entire section about the reconciliation of the Gentiles to God by saying that not only are we now legal citizens with the saints, allowed to be near God as in the Old Testament temple, but now we are actually built together with those of Israel who believed into the New Testament temple.

Additionally, the house of God cannot be the household of God because, while citizenship and being of the household of God are eternal truths of our immutable sonship through Christ Jesus, being metaphorically part of the temple of God includes an immutable truth and a dynamic reality. Ephesians 2:20-21 says we are built and fitly framed together; it is already done. This is our legal sonship in the family of God. This is eternally ours in Christ. However, Ephesians 2:21 says we are growing. This is the renewed mind. Buildings grow as they are built up or edified. As we are built up or edified, and as we mature in Christ, we can remain in the Lord. When individuals are in the Lord they make known the life of Christ Jesus their Lord. As the entire household becomes spiritual grown ups in the renewed mind walk, we become the temple, the place where God lives and is made available to all mankind. Being part of the temple is sonship; being built up and making known the Father is the walk in the Lord. Having the ministry of reconciliation is sonship. Carrying out the ministry as ambassadors for him is the walk in the Lord.

In Ephesians 2:19 the Bible says that we are members of the household of God. A household includes services, however, where those services originate and how they are delivered is not revealed until Ephesians 4:7-16. Notice, first, that in 4:7-8 that the phrase "gifts given to men" shows that God's giving through Christ has already been accomplished.

But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.

Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men

Everything necessary for God's household has already been provided through our Lord Jesus Christ. He is seated at the right hand of God, for all his work is completed. Here it is again in Ephesians 4:11:

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

In Christ, God has called each of us from before the foundations of the world, including those whom He has given to the church as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. He has done this as 4:13 says:

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

Notice that the edifying of the body of Christ is ongoing. There is no retirement plan for God's ministers—sorry. The edification of the body is ongoing rather than a done deal because this is in category of our renewed mind walk. As the temple is built up, so also is the body built up. Both are allegories for the church in the administration of the grace of God. The ministries in the church did not end in the first century with the completion of the Bible. Notice that ministries are given until, as 4:13 says:

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

This certainly hasn't happened yet! Nor will it happen until our lord returns for the church. This is that which is perfect in I Corinthians 13, for this is when we will see him face to face. Now Ephesians 14:14-15 gives the point of the ministries in the church:

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

The point of the gift ministries is that we get beyond the baby state in our believing walk with God to the end that we can speak the truth in love. Once, we can speak the truth in love, we can remain in the Lord as part of God's temple as we continue to grow in Christ. Our walk in the household of God after we have grown up is our walk in the Lord. Ephesians 4:16 concludes by telling the church God's vision for the temple of God which is the body of Christ:

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

Being steadfast and immovable as we abound in the work of the Lord is good because our labor in not in vain when we are in the Lord. As we are faithful in the Lord, we will bring Paul's ways in Christ into remembrance. That is why Paul can say, "Now we live if ye stand fast in the Lord." The same life of Christ that lived in Paul lives in us as we are faithful in the Lord.

To Receive in the Lord

en (1722) kurios (2962) —3 uses

To receive someone in the Lord is explained in Romans 16:2 as to receive someone as becometh saints. The manner of this love that is becoming for saints is detailed in Philemon 1:15-17:

For perhaps he therefore departed for a season, that thou shouldest receive him for ever

Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself.

Below are the uses in this category:

Romans 16:2 That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also.

Philippians 2:29 Receive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness; and hold such in reputation:

Philemon 1:16 Not now as a servant, but above a servant, a brother beloved, specially to me, but how much more unto thee, both in the flesh, and in the Lord?

To Labor in the Lord—4 uses

From I Corinthians the work (ergon—2041) of the Lord equals our labor (kopiano —2872) in the Lord. In I Corinthians 9:1 there is a metonymy of effect. The ultimate result of Paul's ministry as an apostle is that the Corinthians were in the Lord. When Paul says that the Corinthians themselves are his labor, he is putting the effect of his ministry for all that went into that effect, the ministry itself.

Romans 16:12 Salute Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labour (kopiano —2872) in the Lord. Salute the beloved Persis, which laboured (kopiano —2872) much in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 9:1 Am I not an apostle? am I not free? have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are not ye my work in the Lord?

1 Corinthians 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour (2783— kopos) is not in vain in the Lord.

Revelation 14:13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

Faithful in the Lord—3 Uses

To be faithful in the Lord is to be a follower of Paul as he is a follower of Christ. It is to do I Corinthians 11:1:

Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.

Timothy and Tychicus were examples of this. What is important to note that to be faithful in Christ is the prerequisite to being able to receive the truths of Ephesians Philippians and Colossians, while being faithful in the Lord involves being faithful so that others in the household of God can see your life and be blessed by the word you make known by your stand. Being in the Lord is to be in Christ in relationship to the others in the family of God.

1 Corinthians 4:17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.

Ephesians 6:21 But that ye also may know my affairs, and how I do, Tychicus, a beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, shall make known to you all things:

Colossians 4:7 All my state shall Tychicus declare unto you, who is a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord:

Other Truths in the Lord—8

The wife whose husband dies is free to marry whomsoever she will as long the marriage is in the Lord. That is, the woman is in fellowship and the husband is also walking the word in the household of God. In the Lord one's faithfulness in Christ as it is exhibited in the household of God. Therefore, there are truths that apply within the reality of all the believers who are individually walking in fellowship with God, faithfully in Christ. For instance, in the household of God the man and the woman in the marriage relationship are to live inseparably as one. Hence, since both are mutually dependent, one's needs are overlooked at the expense of the other. In Ephesians 5:8 we were darkness before we were born again. Now we are light as we stand faithfully in Christ. Our highest calling is to show God's light in the household among God's people, so it is put for our ministry of reconciliation to the world. As we walk and shine in the household, we are part of the temple of God to the world.

1 Corinthians 7:22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord's freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ's servant.

1 Corinthians 7:39 The wife is bound by the law as long as her husband liveth; but if her husband be dead, she is at liberty to be married to whom she will; only in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 9:2 If I be not an apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am to you: for the seal of mine apostleship are ye in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 11:11 Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord

Ephesians 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

Ephesians 6:10 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.

1 Thessalonians 3:8 For now we live, if ye stand fast in the Lord.

Relationships in the Lord—14 uses

Children, parents, wives and believers all have places they are set in the household of God for God's glory. These are stations set in this life relative to the realities of the senses realm. In Christ spiritually, for eternity, there is no male nor female bond nor free, but all are one in Christ. Rewards in eternity are based on faithfulness to the word of God, not on the stations in the body of Christ in which we are set.

There are several uses of the phrase in the Lord that represent the heart of believing rather than external doings. Children can obey their parents to receive temporal rewards or they can obey from fear. God's primary will is that children are spiritually mature and obey from the heart to please God. In this way they can earn eternal rewards as well as the rewards in this life promised to those who honor their father and mother. Likewise, Euodias and Syntyche were not commanded to agree not to disagree, but to be likeminded in the Lord. If they are likeminded in the Lord they are in complete harmony of heart and mind on the word. This, not a five senses external unity, is the will of God. People don't believe so they dare to interpret the Bible in ways that are self serving. They err not knowing the power of God. If you think you can give your heart and soul in the Lord to the accuracy of His word and receive no reward, you err not knowing the scriptures nor the power of God. If you are speaking God's word in love even when fear is beckoning, you may trust the power of God to deliver you before the whole wide world, as He has always done. On the other hand, some folk think that they can say whatever they like about the scriptures, because no one is watching. This is man's day. The LORD's day comes.

Romans 16:8 Greet Amplias my beloved in the Lord.

Romans 16:13 Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine.

Romans 16:11 Salute Herodion my kinsman. Greet them that be of the household of Narcissus, which are in the Lord.

Romans 16:22 I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord.

1 Corinthians 16:19 The churches of Asia salute you. Aquila and Priscilla salute you much in the Lord, with the church that is in their house.

Ephesians 4:17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

Ephesians 6:1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.

Philippians 1:14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

Colossians 3:18 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

Colossians 3:20 Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto (in) the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 5:12 And we beseech you, brethren, to know them which labour among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you;

Philippians 4:2 I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord.

Philippians 4:1 Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved.

Philemon 1:20 Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord: refresh my bowels in the Lord.

Rejoicing in the Lord

These last several verses seem to use en adverbially to answer the question why rather than where or when rather than how. The same Greek (kauchaomai en) is used for in the Lord and in Christ Jesus. We should remember and rejoice because of who we are in Christ Jesus. Notice that being in Christ Jesus is about fellowship, spirit versus flesh. Being in the Lord takes on the additional dimension of rejoicing for the roles, labor, and service appointed to us in the one body.

Philippians 3:3 For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.

Philippians 3:1 Finally, my brethren, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.

Philippians 4:10 But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly, that now at the last your care of me hath flourished again; wherein ye were also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.

Colossians 2:5 reveals the details of the additional dimension of joy we can have in the Lord:

For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ.

To Speak and Believe in the Lord

en (1722) kurios (2962) —7 uses

Should the Greek phrase en kurios be translated to speak in the Lord or to speak by the Lord. A similar question arises when en kurios is used with the verb to believe or to speak. Because the Greek also uses the phrase dia tou kuriou to say by the Lord careful consideration should be given to the translations that involve en kurios without the definite article (tou).

 In the interest of that study, here are uses of the Greek preposition dia to mean through rather than en.

Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through [dia] our Lord Jesus Christ:

Romans 5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through [dia] our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Romans 15:30 Now I beseech you, brethren, for the Lord Jesus Christ's sake [through—[dia] the Lord], and for the love of the Spirit, that ye strive together with me in your prayers to God for me;

1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through [dia] our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Thessalonians 4:2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by [dia] the Lord Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:9 For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by [dia] our Lord Jesus Christ,

Hebrews 2:3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by [dia] the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

Since there is another phrase that means through the Lord, en kurios cannot mean exactly the same thing. Here are the two uses for consideration:

1 Thessalonians 4:1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus (en kurios), that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.

2 Thessalonians 3:12 Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus (en kurios) Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread.

Similar questions comes into play when studying Philippians 2:24. The words I trust are the exact same verb and form that is translated as I have confidence in Galatians 5:10. Should these verses be translated, “I have confidence through the Lord or in the Lord.

Romans 14:14 I know (oida --1492), and am persuaded (peitho—3982) by (in – en kurios)) the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

Galatians 5:10 I have confidence (peitho— 3982) in you through (in – en kurios) the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be.

Philippians 2:19 But I trust (elpizo—1679) in  the Lord Jesus (en kurios) to send Timotheus shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort, when I know your state.

Philippians 2:24 But I trust (peitho— 3982) in the Lord (en kurios) that I also myself shall come shortly.

2 Thessalonians 3:4 And we have confidence (peitho— 3982) in the Lord (en kurios) touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which we command you.

Here also are three other uses where one could seemingly translate en kurios as by the lord instead of in the lord:

2 Corinthians 2:12 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ's gospel, and a door was opened unto me of (in) the Lord,

Ephesians 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of (in) the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called,

Colossians 4:17 And say to Archippus, Take heed to the ministry which thou hast received in the Lord, that thou fulfil it.
